Works Lewis Baltz Books

I've been a Lewis Baltz fan for about 25 years now--I was aware of "The New Industrial Parks" book as a photo student in the late 70s, and remember seeing a large group of his "Park City" images at the Institute for Contemporary Art in Philadelphia in the early 80s--and I've been buying his books when I could find them and afford them--San Quentin Point, Candlestick Park, and Park City--all beautifully printed, large, definitive.

The new "Works" series is a bit of a surprise--because the books are different than the earlier editions--the size and shape of the books are different, the printing is beautiful but colder than most of the earlier books, and the edits are different. I nearly didn't buy the series because I already own seven out of the ten books--but these are not the same books. The Prototype Works has 85 images rather than 54, but some of the other books are thinner.

One reason I was willing to shell out hundreds of dollars for this series is that I have found that anything Baltz does is worth owning--not to mention that his previous books have mostly appreciated in value--I try not to think about the money I spend on photo books--but I feel about these books the way the local native hunters feel about Caribou--they make me feel rich. Who knows if this set of books will increase in value, but owning them (and being able to compare them with the earlier editions) beats the hell out of the stock market or housing...

And, as Laurie Anderson famously said, "this book is thick enough to stun an Ox..."
